1939 EL Spiraling...Out of Control

Removing handlebar end nuts with my patented tool...

...any flat piece of metal that will fit in the slot...(usually whatever old bracket that's laying on the bench) combined with a suitably sized adjustable...it helps if the end of the bracket is rounded...

slightly rounded end matches the slot in the end nut...

Ouch...that "plain roller" is supposed to be round....
and check out the chunky goodness...

It's all gonna come undone...

Ready for rehab...

Note: I have found that the timing side spiral internals are usually in much better condition than the throttle side due to the difference in use. I have (in a pinch) just swapped the plain roller from the timing side to the throttle side. I then take the worn throttle side roller and flip it (worn side in) and install it in the timing side...the roller wears in the spiral and not so much in the handlebar slot so if you flip it, the "less worn" side is now in the spiral...this is usually fine for the timing side where spiral smoothness and  accuracy are not that critical...grease is good too...

The Roller is worn flat on the sides but the part
of the roller in the handlebar slot is still round...
